This exquisite, red hand-stitched wall hanging depicts a very detailed village scene based on the artist’s town of Bhubaneshwar in Orissa, India, with birds soaring in the blue sky above a happy kingdom. It is a delightful way to brighten up a wall and encourage discussion with children about all that they can see in the scene. The wall hanging is made to last a lifetime and is a piece of artwork in its own right. The distinctive style of appliqué embroidery is a specialty of the ' Darji ' (Tailor) community of Pipili, Puri district, Orissa. The craft involves embroidering and stitching of small pieces of colored cloth with motifs of flowers, animals, village scenes and traditional designs onto a larger base cloth. The hanging could be used either on the wall, as a bed spread or curtain and comes with material loops at the top end.
